CalArts (California Institute of the Arts), a renowned school founded by Walt Disney, was seeking a Director of Board Governance and Relations. Working closely with the President and Chief of Staff, this role would be the primary staff member for the Board of Trustees and designated committees. Significantly, the individual selected would be instrumentally involved in the process of succession planning.
Since the previous individual was promoted to Chief of Staff, the position had been open for a few months prior to engaging Another Source in the recruitment process. The search committee initially found that the local geography posed some logistical challenges to candidates. More importantly, with approximately 30 to 45 members on the CalArts board, the role of Director required a nuanced understanding of finances, academic programming, and strategic oversight. Therefore, previous board experience was needed to be successful in this particular role.
Recognizing the unique combination of skills required, Another Source put together a robust sourcing strategy for CalArts – ranging from the Association of Governing Boards to fine arts institutions and college and university boards. We did targeted outreach to over 50 job boards and more than 200 individuals holding similar titles and high-potential individuals that could be ready for the next step in their careers.
By targeting groups such as national associations and nonprofits in our search, we found candidates with the leadership skills and academic board experience needed. Another Source shared nine highly qualified candidates with the hiring team. CalArts ultimately extended an offer to one of these candidates, ensuring a timely transition into the role.
